The charity has worked in Romania since 1991 and works alongside Focsani social services, supporting a home for disadvantaged children. Its objective is to set up and fund a second home for up to six older teenagers within a safe family environment to learn life skills. Most children it works with have been institutionalised since birth.

History

Back in December 1989 pictures of the Romanian revolution on the streets of the capital Bucharest and the fall of the 21-year dictatorship of Nikolai Chauchesku startled the world. Then, just a few weeks later harrowing television pictures showed the plight of children in the many orphanages all around Romania.
Two of the many who cried when they saw the images were Jenny and David Helyer. They decided they needed to do something more:By 1991 the concept of 'Hands of Love' was brought into being as Jenny and David found themselves making there first of many visits to a town called Focsani. More >>
